The geological
characteristics of salt enabled men to take advantage of this mineral resource
since the Neolithic Ages (2500 B.C.) until now. The quantity and quality of
salt produced from the Cardona salt mine was of huge importance in Catalonia:
the mine had open air mining systems that remained unchanged throughout the
years, and was only altered due to the introduction of gunpowder during the
18th Century and the opening of Pou del Duc, the first subterranean mine in
1900.
In 1925, a new project to mine Sodium Chloride and Potassium began: it consisted
of opening a new mine with two main shafts and a factory for mineral processing.
In addition, an aerial cable was installed that linked the mine and the factory
to the Barcelona seaport. The budget for this project at the time was 19.5 million
pesetas (117,200 Euros)
